Safe and Effective Alternatives

Below is a list of just a few non-toxic substitutes that can be used in place of common household products that are hazardous.  By using them, you will reduce the amount of hazardous waste each of us creates every year and you will save time and possibly money.   More importantly, you will be protecting yourself and your family as well as the environment against hazardous products.

 

 

All Purpose Cleaners

Mix 3 tablespoons baking soda with one quart warm water

Oven Cleaner

Mix 3 tablespoons baking soda with one quart warm water. Sprinkle salt on spills while fresh; scrub

Glass & Window Cleaner

Mix 1/2 cup vinegar and one quart warm water. Wipe with newspaper.

Scouring Powder

Dip a damp cloth in baking soda and rub.

Floor Cleaner

Use soap and water or baking soda and water.

Drain Opener

Pour boiling water down the drain once a week for preventative maintenance. Use a plunger.

Chemical Fertilizers

Compost vegetable scraps and yard waste into a naturally rich soil.

Ant Control

Sprinkle cream of tartar along any path. They will not cross over it.

Air Fresheners/Deodorizers

Simmer cinnamon & cloves or place herbal bouquet in open dish.

Mildew Stain Remover

Use vinegar solution.

Chlorine Bleach

BORAX is good substitute.
