What the SWA Will Do Following a Storm

The Solid Waste Authority provides comprehensive, cost-effective disposal for more than 1.4 million tons of solid waste each year.  In addition, the SWA contracts for the collection of all solid waste and recyclables for unincorporated Palm Beach County.

As in the past, the SWA will draw on its vast solid waste and debris management experience to take a lead role in restoring the County to its pre-storm state in the quickest, safest, and most efficient manner possible.

Once a major storm has passed, the SWA's response plan includes the following tasks:

Task

Days to Complete

Assess all areas of Palm Beach County to determine the amount of damage and debris, and the hardest hit areas. 2-3
Set up temporary debris management sites to serve the SWA's contractors and our municipal partners. 3-4
Mobilize specialized storm debris collection equipment. 4-5
Complete collection of storm debris. 45-180

We ask all residents of unincorporated Palm Beach County to be our partners in this effort.  Your cooperation and support is essential.

  • Please be patient.

  • Re-establishing normal household garbage and food waste collection is our first priority.

  • It may be 3-6 weeks before the first collection of storm debris (vegetation and building debris) is provided.

  • Clean vegetation only will be collected on the first pass.  Construction debris and mixed loads will be collected on subsequent passes.

  • Please do not call and ask that trucks be pulled from scheduled routes to pick up your debris first.  Deviation from carefully planned routes causes delays in the entire process and increases the burden on those with the greatest need.

  • The storm debris collection process consists of multiple passes.  Depending on the severity of the storm there could be 2, 3, or 4 passes.  Please do not fear that you have been missed or that you have to get everything out all at once.  While we encourage residents to bring their debris to the curb as soon as is safely possible, you do have time.

  • The SWA will provide regular updates on the progress of debris collection on this site and through other media outlets.

For additional information, contact SWA Customer Information Services at 697-2700 or 866-SWA-INFO toll-free from southern and western Palm Beach County.  Residents of municipalities should contact their municipal offices directly for debris collection information.  As a service to our municipal residents, we are happy to provide a municipal contact list.
