2006 Volunteer of the Year Awards

Volunteers are the heart and soul of many organizations, and the Solid Waste Authority of PBC is no exception. Our volunteers are crucial to our daily operations, and they met the challenge by contributing over 14,580.25 hours of volunteer service which saved the SWA an astounding $250,637.36. Special awards were given to deserving volunteers in the following categories:

Stanley Samuelson Outstanding Volunteer of the Year

Robert Murphy

Robert Murphy began volunteering with the SWA in January 2004. In 2006 Robert donated over 300 hours of volunteer service. He began assisting the office staff with data entry, mailings and phone support. We quickly noticed that he had a true talent for working with children, so with his “willingness to help” attitude he gladly began working with our School Education Coordinator. He did an amazing job with inventory control, confirming appointments and making all of the “teacher bags” for the classroom and school assembly presentations.

He also participated at many of our events throughout the year, including the South Florida Fair, Library Events, Health Fairs, Community Events and our One-Sided Note Pad project. Robert gave us the greatest gift of all, the gift of “time” and we truly appreciate all that he has done for us.

Green Team Family Volunteer of the Year

Dolores and Albert Snyder

This lovely husband and wife team has been part of the SWA since 1996. In 2006 they donated over 100 volunteer hours between working on special projects in the office and also participating in our “Green Team” special events program. Those events included the Home & Garden Show, South Florida Fair, the SWA Friends and Family Picnic, Hoffman Chocolates Holiday Celebration, Community Events, and Library Events.

They were also very active in our Neighbor-To-Neighbor volunteer program. This is a great way to share information in your community about the importance of waste prevention and the 3R’s reducing, reusing and recycling.

In 2006, she donated over 96 volunteer hours and participated in several of our special events including the Home & Garden Show, and the South Florida Fair. She enjoyed giving back to her community and she did just that by becoming very active in the Paint Your Heart Out program and the Neighbor-To-Neighbor program. She also spent her summer volunteering at the Resource Recovery Plant as an Office Assistant and also in the Recycling Department as a Special Project Assistant.

Shehani is a junior in the IB program at Suncoast High School. She is the President of the SECME program, and also belongs to the Computer Science Club, Asian Student Association, Hands Across Campus, and tutors students in computer programming and AP Java computer classes.

Anita Lankler Outstanding Participation Award

Watergate Estates

Watergate Estates residents became a Solid Waste Authority Adopt-A-Spot (AAS) Community in July of 2004. Their first AAS clean up was conducted by three (3) residents as volunteers who worked for hours cleaning litter from roadways in this community tucked in western Boca Raton. After the initial cleanup they continued to clean up litter and recruit volunteers in the community and by 2005 were established as the Watergate Estates Beautification program, W. E. C. A. R. E. - An Adopt a Spot Community.

In 2007 Deputy Shawn Goddard of PBSO Community Policing Unit and WECARE joined forces to contribute to the overall beauty of the Watergate Estates neighborhood. To this day they continue in their efforts to help others in need while keeping the streets clean and safe.

Because of their endless dedication, Watergate Estates WECARE Adopt a Spot Community has been awarded the Anita Lankler volunteer group of the year for 2006/2007.

The SWA would like to say thank you for a great litter free year to all of the volunteers for their endless dedication. Special thanks to Deputy Shawn Goddard for his commitment in assisting this very caring and dedicated community.
